Formatting Images: General Information

Convert all color photographs to CMYK. This will ensure that your images separate properly. Please, use grayscale for black and white photographs.

We output your files at an 85 line screen so it is only necessary to scan your contone images at 170dpi (2X the line screen). Please do not increase the file size or resolution after scanning, doing so will create a pixellated image that you will not be happy with. Additionally, any images taken from the Internet will also print poorly.

Line art, however, should be scanned in at our imagesetters output resolution, 1200 dpi.

Your files should be saved as TIF's and please, never use LZW compression.

The Virginia Gazette is fully committed to ensuring that our customers are satisfied with the printing of their publication. Formatting your grayscale images

Correct the Image Size

We output your files at an 85 line screen so it is only necessary to scan your images at 170dpi (2X the line screen). Saving your images at higher resolutions will unnecessarily increase the file size.

All scaling beyond 20 percent should be performed in this Photoshop dialog box and not the page layout application.

Convert the image to grayscale

If your image is going to print on a black and white page please change the format to grayscale as shown above.

Adjust the curves

It is often necessary to adjust the curves of a photograph so the image will print correctly on a press. Remember that because of dot gain anything 85 percent and above will print at 100 percent. This being the case please make the darkest portion of your picture 85 percent as shown above.

Sharpen the image

Even though the image may look sharp on your screen it is almost always a good idea to sharpen it a little. The process of transferring ink onto newsprint will soften an image. To compensate for this "softening" use the unsharp mask tool.
